How do you identify your own developmental gaps?

Well, the simplest way to do that is to seek feedback… and that means honest (maybe even brutally honest) feedback… the good, the bad, and the ugly!

Then to openly accept that feedback with the intention of using it to improve.

I know it’s often hard to receive feedback, and harder to ask for it. But it’s the key to unlocking true growth.

So, what is the easiest way to get that feedback? Just ask… go to your manager and ask them for honest insight.

But here is one thing you need to remember, it can be hard to give feedback to someone you value. So this may not come easy to your manager either.

And that means you need to be ready to ask open-ended questions or ask for examples…

Because one thing is certain… if you’re opening yourself up for feedback you want it to be as valuable as possible! And to use it effectively.

Then once you know where the gaps are, the next step is understanding them…

Then it’s time to form a plan of action, and these questions will help…

What will you do to close these gaps? Where will your focus be most beneficial? What opportunities will make it possible to demonstrate this improvement?

See, the things that we do best aren’t what causes growth or advancement. The secret to growth is in the things we least like to do or don’t do well…

It’s these gaps that hold you back from any desired promotion, raise, or recognition.
